Our organization was earlier referred by the name, Straub Employees Federal Credit Union, but in late November 2000 it was changed to Kokua Federal Credit Union. The reason we chose this name was because it reflected our Credit Union’s strategy which is to expand our reach to individuals apart from the Straub Clinic and Hospital. As of now, our Credit Union is covering a total of 1,200 members who have deposits greater than $7 million. From its initiation in 1965, our services have assisted over 10,869 members/borrowers dealing in excess of $42 million in loans for various needs like home loans, car loans, college fee etc.
Our Members organize annual meets in order to elect among themselves their own Board of Directors who will serve for them, dedicated to their duties. The Credit unions are financial cooperatives responsible for certain groups of people with a commonality- employment, association membership, or residence in a given particular location.
As of now, there are 96 federal and state-chartered credit unions in the geographical area of Hawaii. Around the world, an excess of 112 million people come from 37,000 credit unions.
